A nail biter versus RGS Lancaster on a Sunny day fit for running rugby. Barney went into this game having to deal with several players being unavailable or struggling with illness. They faced a robust and physical Lancaster side who were well organised and played a good brand of rugby. The home team huffed and puffed in the first half but struggled to get out of their own half, get effective go forward or stop the oppositions maul when defending. Losing 3-19 at half time matters looked fairly bleak. Some intelligent and firm words by coach Metcalfe led to an immediate response with Fluen scoring a converted try from the wide channels. Lancaster made an almost immediate response scroing a well worked pick and go try which importantly was not converted. More success came for the hosts after fly half O Cass kicked in behind well and some determined chasing trapped the away team in their own half. An excellent defensive read led to backrower H Cass intercepting on half way and having enough in the tank to score. His brother dually converted the score. The game was now turning in Barneys favour and yet more careless discipline from the opposition at the breakdown let to Dickson and Barwick taking quick taps. As the game entered the last 10 minutes the ball was span wide and some excellent draw and pass work saw Fluen score a converted try to put Barney level with the visitors the first time. The lead didn’t last long as Lancaster retrieved their own kick off, offloaded through contact and put their winger away to score tight to the corner. Again the vital conversion was narrowly missed. The score was now 24-29 and the game was into the last 4 minutes. Barney were pinned in their own half however the ball was retained and some decisive line breaks by Barwick and Cronin led to the ball being given to Claye on the hoof at the opposition 22m line. The number 8 powered over beating several defenders to score under the posts. O Cass who was immaculate with the boot dialog converted and the game was sealed at 31-29 to the home side.
